Launched in 2022, the EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab brings together a multidisciplinary team of over 100 researchers and scientists from around the world, combining the best of industry and academia. Their shared mission: to design and implement enabling technologies that transform traditional eyewear into intelligent, connected and high-performance devices.

At the heart of this initiative is EssilorLuxottica’s vision: to establish a transformative platform that reimagines the eyes as the gateway to a future at the crossroads of human and artificial intelligence, seamlessly bridging the physical and digital worlds.

The Lab’s research activity is focused on three key areas – all crucial in overcoming the technological challenge of creating powerful, functional and truly wearable smart eyewear.

Eye Tracking: Precision Meets Prevention | A foundational technology driving this evolution is eye tracking. By capturing eye movement and attention in real-time, it enables highly accurate and more natural user interaction. More importantly, it offers valuable insights into an individual’s health, holding the significant potential for early detection of systemic conditions and neurodegenerative diseases – opening new avenues in preventive care. Researchers at the Smart Eyewear Lab are focusing on developing miniaturized, energy-efficient, embedded eye tracking technologies that integrate discreetly into everyday eyewear, combining comfort with powerful, life-enhancing diagnostic capabilities.

Camera and Sensors: Seamless Interaction | Guided by the principle that smart glasses must retain the aesthetics of traditional eyewear, the Lab’s researchers are seamlessly embedding miniaturized sensors and cameras into the frames. These discreet components are designed to collect and interpret physiological and behavioral data, environmental context insights and user intent in real-time – eliminating the need for overt gestures or voice commands. Powered by advanced algorithms, the glasses will respond dynamically to their surroundings, fostering natural, intuitive, and immersive interactions.

Optical Integration: Purposeful Augmented Reality | Optical integration is another critical frontier, enabling a harmonious blend of digital content with the physical world. The Lab is pioneering ultra-lightweight, high-definition display technologies that serve as intuitive visual interfaces. In the future, these technologies may provide support in delivering real-time information within the wearer’s natural field of view, creating immersive experiences that feel natural, are visually effortless and integrate harmoniously into daily life without causing fatigue or disrupting perception.

Educating the Innovators of Tomorrow

As part of this partnership, a new Interdisciplinary Programme in Smart Wearable Technologies will launch at Politecnico di Milano in September 2025. The program aims to cultivate the next generation of talent shaping the future of smart, human-centered wearables. Offering 750 hours of specialized, cross-disciplinary education, it will prepare future innovators to lead in fields such as photonics, electronics, interactive design, advanced materials, and AI.
