EssilorLuxottica Celebrates World Oceans Day 2025
3 min

In honor of World Oceans Day on June 8, EssilorLuxottica is pleased to introduce a new commitment aimed at minimizing single-use plastic packaging throughout its worldwide activities.

Making caring for our planet and oceans a priority, EssilorLuxottica is actively transforming its processes to be more circular through its ‘Eyes on Circularity’ pillar (part of its Eyes on the Planet sustainability program) by sourcing innovative materials, recycling input, embedding eco-designs and investing in new technologies.

To further promote awareness on the importance of protecting our marine environments and the role we play in minimizing waste in our waters, the Group has also created a global campaign with the key message ‘Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate’ for its corporate channels as well as an internal campaign to engage all employees on its new commitment to reduce single-use plastic packaging by 2030.

Minimizing Single-Use Plastic Packaging by 2030

EssilorLuxottica is aware of the potential environmental risks connected to single-use plastic in the market and has been working on this challenge for several years.

This Ocean’s Day 2025, the Group wants to highlight its commitment dedicated to significantly minimizing single-use plastic packaging across its global value chain. Taking into consideration different existing frameworks and local laws, EssilorLuxottica defines ‘single-use plastic’ as: “Items made of plastic, specifically placed on the market to be used once and for the purpose of which it was designed. Single-use plastics are not intended for repeated use and lack the durability to be repurposed”. Targets are set to reduce single-use plastic packaging by 60% in its B2C stream by 2030 and 30% in its B2B stream by 2030, with 2023 volumes as a baseline.

The Group has key teams working to continuously identify potential alternatives for its product packaging, focusing on B2C packaging for products sent directly to the final consumer, and B2B packaging for materials, components or products intended for distribution to other manufacturers or intermediaries. To achieve its 2030 targets, the Group will continue to prioritize the elimination of single-use plastics and favor replacement with reusable, non-plastic or recycled options.

Advancing Circularity for Frames and Lenses

In addition to circularity for packaging, EssilorLuxottica has ongoing projects to valorize and reduce material waste generated through its frames and lens operations. In 2024, more than 95 tons of nylon plastic scraps from the injection manufacturing process were recycled, and a new project has been launched to transform nylon waste into in-store plastic displays across EMEA.

On the lenses side, last year its Slim Fit project, which decreases input material during prescription lens production, helped prevent 2,100 tons of waste, and the Group also launched its first recycled demo lenses* with 80% recycled content as used in collections from Arnette, Chanel, Vogue and Armani.

Costa Del Mar & Its Mission to Preserve Oceans

Further addressing the plastics challenge, the Group’s sunglasses brand Costa Del Mar has been preserving and protecting ocean life for over 40 years. From building products made with responsible materials, including reclycled fishing nets, to Costa-owned initiatives like Kick Plastic to reduce single use plastic, and partnerships with mission-aligned conservation organizations, Costa Del Mar inspires its community to help protect the planet’s resources.  More information on Costa’s commitment to preserving the ocean and waterways while conserving the life within them can be found at Costadelmar.com.
